To the north-west is the town of Rustenburg, a global centre of platinum mining. To the south, just across the Gauteng border, is Sasolburg, a town centred on the production of oil from coal.
To the south-west is a patchwork of towns historically anchored on gold-mining, among them Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp. These centres have seen limited population growth over the last decades as their gold-mining economies have stagnated. To the east are a number of small to medium sized towns, notably Witbank, Middleburg and Secunda, anchored respectively on coal mining, iron and steel production and energy generation.
This area of over half a million people has little economy of its own. It is functionally connected to the Gauteng economy by subsidised bus transport routes that have historically ferried thousands of workers into central Pretoria on a long-distance daily commute. After the discovery of gold in , the region became the single largest gold producer in the world and was when the city of Johannesburg was founded. Gauteng is divided in the south by the Vaal River which separates it from the Free State. It also borders with the North West , Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Mostly dominated by gleaming skyscrapers in the cities which is in sharp contrast to the African herbal shops, stalls and Indian bazaars with streets lined with fruit sellers and vendors.
Gauteng is an eclectic mix of unique styles and tastes, in a sensual blend of ethnic and western. This blend is even more significant in the theatres and open-air arenas dotted throughout the cities. Gauteng is one of the most important educational and health centres in the county with Pretoria boasting the largest residential university in South Africa , the University of Pretoria.
Most of the Gauteng province is on the Highveld, a high-altitude dry grassland area where thunderstorms are common and seasonal changes fairly stable.
As the economic hub of South Africa Gauteng has many large companies basing their headquarters here. Overseas companies are known to use Gauteng as their commercial base and as a gateway into Africa.
Gauteng is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange which is the largest stock exchange in Africa , as well as the Porsche centre, the largest in the world. KwaZulu-Natal is the only province with a monarchy specifically provided for in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of Named after the Limpopo River that flows along its northern border, the province is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures.
This province is in the Savanna Biome, an area of mixed grassland and trees, which is generally known as bushveld. The largest section of the Kruger National Park is situated along the eastern boundary of Limpopo with Mozambique. Mpumalanga means Place where the sun rises. Mpumalanga falls mainly within the Grassland Biome. The escarpment and the Lowveld form a transitional zone between this grassland area and the Savanna Biome.
The area has a network of excellent roads and railway connections, making it highly accessible. Mpumalanga is also served by a number of small airports, such as the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Mbombela is the capital of the province and the administrative and business centre of the Lowveld. Large-scale manufacturing occurs especially in the northern Highveld area, particularly chrome-alloy and steel manufacturing.
The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains represent the best-preserved succession of volcanic and sedimentary rock dating back 3,25 to 3,6 billion years. However, the Northern Cape remains the province with the smallest share of the South African population. The province is noted for its San rock art, diamond diggings, 4X4 safaris and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is a vast stretch of semi-desert land. The province is renowned for its spectacular display of spring flowers which, for a short period every year, attracts thousands of tourists.
The Northern Cape is one of two sites to host the Square Kilometre Array radio-telescope better known as the SKA Project , the largest and most advanced radio telescope in the world.
Electrical power generation presents an opportunity for greater economic diversification and growth in the province. North West lies in the north of South Africa, on the Botswana border, fringed by the Kalahari desert in the west, Gauteng to the east, and the Free State to the south.
